Montefalco is a stunningly beautiful medieval hilltop town, situated in the heart of Umbria and Italy. The town’s ancient walls surround a maze of picturesque cobbled streets, medieval towers, renaissance churches and much more – a glance in any direction reveals Montefalco’s many cultural and artistc jewels.

Perched atop a hill overlooking the glorious Spoleto valley, Montefalco affords breathtaking views in every direction. Its slopes are dotted with ancient olive groves, vineyards producing the famous local wine, and stone villas. The local wine, Sagrantino, is famous in Italy and abroad and can be tasted in the town’s numerous wine bars and wineries directly. The extra virgin olive oil, too, is renowned and delicious.
There are a number of great restaurants within Montefalco’s walls where you can try the local fare – home-made pasta, truffles and game among other things – while dotted around the countryside there are many superb places to eat and drink in traditional Italian style. Or if you want a traditional Umbrian cooking lesson, try the Wild Foods Gastronomical Adventure.
Montefalco is also an excellent base for visiting the wider Umbrian area. It’s just a stone’s throw from Perugia, Assisi, Spello, Spoleto, Norcia, Castelluccio and Pettino to name a few. It’s also just over an hour’s drive from Siena, an hour and half from Rome and two hours from Florence. There are cafes, supermarkets, internet points, banks with ATMs, a post office and many other amenities. They’re also connected to many other towns, including the Foligno train station, by bus.
